WP10 - Rare Cancer Policy

Catalonian Institute of Oncology is a comprehensive cancer center with a catchment area of 2,5 million of population in three different territories of the Catalonian Region. Currently, cancer care offered includes medical oncology, radiation oncology, haematology and palliative care besides epidemiology and preventive as well as translational research programme. More than 10.000 news cancer patients receive care in its facilities every year. ICO is an university teaching hospital (University of Barcelona). The Catalonian Cancer Plan is also based on the ICO but with a mandate from the Department of Health.



WP10 will build on and integrate the outcomes from all WPs related to policy recommendations in order to compile them through a common framework.


  •  To propose a core set of strategies and measures to build in the national cancer plans and rare disease plans across the EU Member States, so to be fully inclusive and address the specific need of rare cancers in order to improve health outcomes through improved quality of care, better patient access to care, and reduction of inequalities across Europe.
  •  To analyze current problems in the designation of orphan drug medical products and in marketing of medicinal products for rare cancers; and identify possible ways to address the major issues.
  •  To discuss models for harmonization, governance and coordination of ERNs in order to maximize their chances of having a positive impact on quality of care across Europe.
